Chief Administrative Officer

Established in 1819 and officially named Carleton Place in 1829, the Town of Carleton Place is located in Lanark County, about 46 kilometres west of downtown Ottawa. It is situated at the crossroads of Highway 15 and Highway 7.

The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) reports directly to the Mayor and six Councillors and ensures that the programs and services of the municipality are delivered in accordance with Council-approved policy, manages the administration of the municipality and makes certain all services are delivered in a professional, effective and efficient manner. The Chief Administration Officer will oversee 5 Directors, approximately 81 full time and 130 part-time staff and direct a combined budget of $31,200,000.

The candidate we seek will have 3 to 5 years senior management experience in another municipality. The candidate will possess a degree in Business/Public Administration (MPA or equivalent) plus a combination of education and experience. The position of CAO will require the following key leadership competencies:

  • Is a skilled communicator with ability to lead and motivate an effective team through skills of listening, informing and delegating.
  • Is able to set priorities and adept at time management.
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Is politically savvy; ability to work in a political environment with many stakeholders.
  • Has an ability to work effectively with all areas of the organization.

We are seeking a person who is approachable, inspiring, and demonstrates strong time management abilities. Openness, integrity and trustworthiness will be essential attributes. This position will be of particular interest to those who will enjoy the challenge of building a new Management Team as several of the current senior managers retire.  The Town offers a fair salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
