Recently, I got the following email from a Chief Administrative Officer. It read like an article from “True Confessions” magazine.

Dear Bruce

Am I the only CAO in Canada who, when looking for a Director, got a CV that described James Bond, sat with a candidate who interviewed like Daniel Craig, then, sadly had to work with Johnny English for years after he was hired?

The personnel agency I was working with regularly threw CV’s at me with the comforting phrase, “I don’t think this one is for you, but I thought you might like a look!”

It always felt like she was softening me up in an attempt to lower my standards enough to sneak some “zombie” – the best they could find – through the door. In retrospect, my “standards” were plummeting each time I would end up with another “Johnny English”, and I would invariably wind up doing my work and much of his!

I wish someone could have given me some guidance before I made some bad hiring choices.

Fortunately, I now know better, I have the ‘scars’ to prove it.


TCMOG (Too cheap for my own good)


First of all, don’t be too hard on yourself – there are lots of municipal leaders who “shouldn’t have been so cheap.” Many of them bought into the lie that all they’d have to do is put an ad in the paper or post the job on some web site and that would do the trick.

And, even some of those who had the “wisdom” to hire an outside agency made the mistake of hiring someone who didn’t really know the municipal market. Those are the companies who, as you essentially said, just threw enough “stuff” at the wall, hoping that some of it might stick.

I suppose it might seem self-serving to say, “You should have retained a legitimate recruiter like Ravenhill Group,” but here goes anyway. YOU SHOULD HAVE RETAINED RAVENHILL! We’re the ONLY legitimate recruiter specializing in municipal search work coast to coast to coast!

Doing anything in this life simply because it appears to cost less is pretty well always a formula for failure. Even though doing-it-yourself or using a personnel agency costs less, you should have remembered the old adage, “You get what you pay for!”

Typically, a personnel agency, and even some “so-called” recruiters, only post job ads, cross their fingers and hope for the best. They really have no ability to find “passive candidates” … the ones who are NOT looking.
